The Henry Compton School

The Henry Compton School in West London is an 11 to 16 comprehensive school for boys. The school has high calibre teaching staff, committed to the educational development of all children in their care. Teaching staff have access to excellent facilities, including colour learning materials produced on a high speed RISO production printer.

Damian Scott teaches Design Technology at the school. Mr Scott explained that colour makes a real difference in the classroom: “Colour print has much greater visual appeal than black and white. It is more realistic. The children respond better to colour.” As well as adding impact to class learning materials, colour is used by the school to present coursework in its best possible light.

Mr Scott explained that coursework prepared by the children is enlarged and printed in colour. With coursework contributing up to 60% of the final GCSE grade, Mr Scott has no doubt that effective presentation of coursework is helping his pupils maximise their grade potential. According to Mr Scott, “there is a glow of pride in the children’s faces when they see their work reproduced in colour.”

The RISO printer is operated by media resource officer, Andrew le Goff. Andrew uses the RISO for much of the school’s copying and printing. “We have a colour copier as well but it is more expensive to run. We charge prints and copies back to individual departments. With the output from the RISO costing a fraction of that of the copier, there’s high demand for the RISO.”

Speed and productivity also play a part. The RISO, which prints in colour at speeds of up to 120 pages a minute, is more productive than the colour copier. As Andrew explained, “There’s only one of me and there is high demand for print. The RISO is much quicker than the copier and it enables me to get more done. It can even produce ready folded and stapled booklets.”

As well as being fast and efficient, the RISO printer has proved amazingly reliable. As Andrew says, “We’ve had the RISO for two years. It is extremely reliable. It was three months before we placed the first service call and I don’t remember it ever breaking down to a point that it couldn’t be used.” It seems that the RISO is the perfect print solution for this forward looking school.
