St Albans Girls School

St Albans Girls School provides its pupils with high quality learning materials that are printed in full colour. The colour documents have greater visual appeal and are easier for pupils to digest than those printed in black and white. Worksheets, handouts, extracts from books and mock exam papers are printed in full colour, at high speed and low cost, using a RISO production printer.

The RISO is networked and teaching staff are able to print material for classroom use directly to the machine. Printing and copying in both full colour and black and white at speeds of up to 120 pages a minute, the RISO copes easily with demand, producing beautifully finished papers, booklets and magazines with little effort. And with 1100 pupils on roll, demand can sometimes be very high indeed.

Explaining why the school chose the RISO device, assistant head teacher Paul Lerwill said: “We already had a colour photocopier. Teachers were producing more and more material in colour and our print costs were growing. The RISO printer is much less expensive to run than the copier. Using the RISO we get more colour for our money.”

Other advantages of the RISO colour technology identified by Paul Lerwill include the sheer speed and productivity of the machine, and its strong environmental credentials. Paul explained: “Our reprographics equipment is located in a relatively small and confined area. The RISO doesn’t generate heat or emit fumes, making the working environment that much more pleasant.”

Resource assistant Penny Simpson uses the RISO to produce the school newsletter. More than 1100 copies of the colourful multipage booklet are distributed every week. The RISO, which prints double-sided and automatically folds and staples output, steams through the work in very little time. By contrast, using the copier for the same job was, according to Penny, “like taking the slow boat to China.”

Penny Simpson says that teaching staff have “latched on to colour”. Penny explained: “Colour has more of an impact and teachers say that it makes a real difference in the classroom. Colour from the RISO costs about the same as a black and white copy. With colour from the RISO so much cheaper, teachers feel they can use colour on a wider range of materials.”
