The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls has two RISO colour production printers. A large and successful specialist college for science and mathematics, the school uses the RISO printers for all copying and printing. Ultra low page costs mean that the school is able to add colour to teaching materials, improving lesson delivery without stretching financial resources.
School business manager Mr Fernandes explained: “We used conventional colour copiers before acquiring the RISOs. Output from the RISO printers costs less than a third that of the photocopiers. It means we can produce a wider variety of teaching material in colour. Pupils find colour exciting and motivational. It is helping us to improve standards.”
With 1400 pupils on roll, the school needs exceptionally fast and productive print equipment. The two RISOs, which print in colour at 120 pages a minute, provide the capacity to print more than 14,000 colour pages an hour. Inline finishing systems automate the process, enabling staff to produce beautifully presented colour booklets with minimal effort.
When replacing the photocopiers, the school was keen to reduce its carbon footprint and introduce a more environmentally friendly print solution. Conventional copiers and printers use heat in the fusing process and emit ozone and noxious gasses. The RISO devices employ high-speed inkjet technology which uses very little energy and emits no pollutants.
Explaining that environmental sustainability is part of the school’s Every Child Matters agenda, Mr Fernandes said: “We don’t want to leave the planet in a mess. One of the advantages of the RISO technology is that it is ecologically sound. It is a cold process. The machines use ink as opposed to toner and consume considerably less electricity. The RISOs are helping us to reduce our carbon footprint.”
The RISO’s have proved extremely reliable. Despite producing hundreds of thousands of print and copies every term, the RISO printers have seldom needed servicing. Mr Fernandes said: “They are very reliable; they simply don’t break down. We know that we will be able to rely upon the RISO printers for years to come.”
It seems the RISO’s have it all. Colourful, cheap to run, highly productive and kind to the environment, they are moreover, helping to raise standards. Mr Fernandes explained: “Since introducing the RISO’s, there has been a marked improvement in the standard of teaching materials. We use a lot more colour. It has improved lesson delivery and made a positive impact on learning.”
