Worthing College

Worthing College provides a wide range of full and part time courses for 16-19 year olds, adults and businesses. Academically successful, the college recently recorded its best ever ‘A’ level results and is popular with students. Ofsted noted that “teaching and learning are good” and that “teachers make effective use of learning technologies” to make lessons stimulating.

According to College Principal, Peter Corrigan, teaching staff “focus on the most up to date teaching and learning methods to maximise success.” Wide use is made of computer technologies, including data projection and touch panel displays. Much of the computer based learning material has colour content. To ensure full benefit is gained from the material, handouts are printed in colour.

The college uses a RISO colour production printer for the bulk of its copying and printing. The RISO, which runs at high speed, is capable of printing more than 7000 full colour or black and white pages per hour. In the first few months of use, the RISO printed more than ¾ of a million pages. Output includes class work and parent communication as well as marketing materials like course handbooks which are printed in colour and presented as booklets.

Reprographic assistant Peter Davy says that colour capability was a key factor when selecting equipment: “We were faced with a choice between a large B&W photocopier or a RISO. Colour was the deciding factor. The RISO promised to meet our volume colour needs at low cost.” The low page cost combined with its sophisticated finishing capabilities are driving a growing demand for colour.

Explaining the impact that the RISO colour is making, Peter said: “We produce more work in colour than previously. Quality has improved. The colour handbooks and other marketing materials help attract new students to the college. Pleasant comments have been made about the quality of the materials we produce and complaints have gone down.”

The RISO’s speed of production and its on-line finishing capabilities have been a revelation and are saving Peter a huge amount of time: “We used to collate, staple and fold course handbooks manually. The RISO produces 60 page booklets on-line without any manual intervention. It has made a big difference. I now run the department on my own; I couldn’t have coped with the volume without it.”
