Feltham Community College

Feltham Community College in West London is one of the area’s leading schools. A specialist sport & ICT college with 1400 pupils, the school roll is growing as parents clamour to get children into the school. More and more pupils are also choosing to stay on and study in the college’s sixth form. The school’s reputation is based in part on its excellent facilities and businesslike attitude.

The College takes a professional approach to printing. John Butler, the college’s hugely experienced reprographics manager, has worked in print production for 40 years. John runs the reprographics facility which produces print communication for the classroom, parents and the local community. To meet demand, the print room is equipped with four high speed print devices, including the latest RISO colour production printer.

The RISO, which can produce more than 7000 colour pages an hour, is used to meet much of the College’s growing colour print volume. John explained that colour is increasingly used in the classroom and in communication with parents because “it attracts attention” adding, “if we could justify it, we would do everything in colour!” Colour output includes course notes, display material, newsletters and letterhead paper.

Prior to the RISO, the college had used a conventional colour photocopier. Although print quality was good, the photocopier was slow and colour print expensive. John explained that since the introduction of the RISO “colour print costs have tumbled”, helping make wide use of colour a viable proposition. Putting costs in perspective, John explained: “Colour from the RISO costs just one third of that from the colour photocopier.”

John is also impressed with the finishing capabilities of the RISO. Not only is the machine incredibly fast, it prints and copies double- sided and can fold, staple and finish output. The RISO at Feltham Community College is equipped with an automatic Booklet Maker, which allows John to produce the eye-catching colour flyers used to promote the College to prospective parents.

Summing up the advantages of the RISO, John said: “The RISO is fast and affordable. It produces large volumes of colour work quickly and at a lower cost than a photocopier. Using the RISO, we can afford to make more use of colour.” The college has extended the benefits of affordable colour print to other schools in the area, producing work on their behalf at lower cost than commercial print.
