St Wilfrids Catholic High School

St Wilfrids Catholic High School in West Yorkshire is a large secondary school, sixth form and language college. A religious school with a distinctive Catholic identity, St Wilfrids seeks to ensure the development of its students’ spiritual, moral and academic potential by reference to Christian teachings. Much of the school’s printing and copying, including bible texts, is produced on a RISO production printer.

With 1800 pupils on roll, the school makes high demands of its reprographic equipment. Putting print volumes in context, reprographics technician Heather Tailby explained that the school consumes more than 2000 reams of paper every term. The RISO, which prints and copies in full colour at high speed, is used for production of volume communication pieces such as newsletters and bulletins.

From Heather’s perspective, the beauty of the RISO device for production work is that it is fast and that all finishing features are fully automated. According to Heather, “The RISO thrives on work. It just keeps going and going. Other than loading paper, there’s not a lot of handling involved. I just leave it to run. I would recommend the RISO to any school producing large numbers of colour booklets.”

Heather’s views are shared by Claire Appleby, the school’s office manager. Claire said: “The RISO, with its high speed booklet maker, is brilliant for A3 booklets such as exam papers and newsletters. Printing them in colour doesn’t slow production but it does add quality. We like to use colour, particularly on letters, bulletins and newsletters that go home to parents.”

Colour output can cost more to produce than black and white, a fact that is keenly recognised by St Wilfrid’s bursar, Maureen Mortimer. Explaining the initial decision to acquire the RISO device, Maureen commented that the colour output from the RISO costs no more than black and white output from the school’s conventional photocopiers. Acquiring the RISO meant that the school could make wider use of colour without adding cost.

Expanding upon the importance of colour print to the school, Maureen said: “Colour enhances the quality of work. It helps us present the school in a good light to parents and to the wider community. It encourages the pupils too. They like to see their own work reproduced in colour. The RISO, with its high productivity and low page cost is our workhorse for colour.”
