Lightcliffe Primary School

Charles Woodbridge is Head teacher at Lightcliffe Primary School, a church aided school in Halifax. “I first used a RISO CR1610 duplicator six or seven years ago. It was much faster than the school photocopier and much more reliable. Although a black-and-white duplicator, as far as I was concerned it meant that RISO was tried and tested technology.”

“Colour is a motivator for children. We did produce some colour print prior to having the Riso but our old colour copier was slow and expensive to run. We now produce most material in colour. It adds polish to our print communication and helps raise the profile of the school. With the Riso copying at 120 pages a minute, we even have time to print the school newsletter in colour.”

A colour innovator, Charles has experimented with the use of colour on envelopes. “Adding our school logo to envelopes has added impact and makes them look more professional. We couldn’t feed envelopes through the copier but it is easy to overprint envelopes on the Riso.”

Teaching staff are asked to use colour whenever appropriate, highlighting key words in text perhaps, to make them stand out. Colour is also used to help dyslexic children read. Charles explained “With Irlens syndrome, a form of dyslexia, words can appear to vibrate on the page making them difficult to read. By printing text in colour, the effect can be diminished.”

Lightcliffe Primary School tracks print costs, recharging them to the users’ budget. Users have individual codes which are entered when the machine is used. The Riso can print a summary of usage allowing costs to be charged back to the relevant budget. Lightcliffe Primary is looking to turn expenditure to income, offering colour print services to the local community as a service and an incremental income stream.
