Priory School in Slough is a Creative Partnership school which teaches foundation subjects through the medium of the arts; inviting artists, musicians and actors into school to work with the children. The programme is a success. A recent Ofsted report said: 'Pupils engagement and enjoyment of lessons, their excellent behaviour and attitudes to learning and the commitment and dedication of their teachers make this a very happy school'.
The school’s deputy headmaster Bob Gardner explained, “The programme engages the children and helps develop their creativity and understanding”. With the arts key to the education process, Bob says that colour print is an essential tool: “When studying art, children need a good reproduction that brings a painting to life. We used a variety of colour printers but the consumables were expensive. We had to take a pace back and look at alternatives.”
Bob Gardener saw a RISO printer in use at nearby Claypots School. The RISO is a high speed printer capable of producing 7,200 colour pages an hour. Bob was impressed with the sheer speed of production and the way that it was networked for use by multiple users. The colour print quality was not perhaps as good as that from a laser printer but as Bob explained, “We had to balance quality against cost.”
Priory School ordered two RISO printers. The machines are used to produce both colour and black and white print and copy output. With two machines, the workload is shared with users printing to device nearest to them. RISO helped the school create a wireless print network which teachers access from laptop computers. Work is saved to a year group folder on the RISO from where it is printed when required.
The school is delighted with the RISO printers, although as Bob admits, they have still to realise their full potential: “We are crawling at the moment. We are only just starting to see the possibilities. Take the school newsletter. It is a full colour production. We used to outsource it but we now print it in house. It is an 8 page booklet printed double-sided onto A3 paper. The RISO prints 2000 copies in no-time and sorts them into class sets.”
RISO’s support has been exemplary: “They are a people company. Their training and support is superb. Both machines were installed with minimal disruption to school life. They helped us set the printers up on the school network and even helped established a wireless network for the teachers. It is the little things that make a difference. When we have a problem we can, for example, talk directly to the engineer.”
